Behavior of Layers under Different Light Sources Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Tavares,BO; Pereira,DF; Bueno,LGF; Silva,GF.
ABSTRACT Light is an important factor in the management of laying poultry. The ideal lamp spectrum that provides the best welfare conditions still needs to be determined. Wavelength and light intensity influence poultry behavior and their welfare. This study evaluated the influence of four lamps types with different light spectra on the behavior of seventy 52-week laying hens. Incandescent, fluorescent, and sodium and mercury vapor lamps were set in a different poultry house each and supplied similar light intensities. Layer behavior was video-recorded three times weekly using video cameras installed on the ceiling. The effects of different wavelengths emitted by the light sources on layer behavior were evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis median test. Results...

Epidemiology of domestic cat behavioral problems in the city of Porto Alegre/Brazil: a survey of small animal veterinary practitioners Ciência Rural
Albuquerque,Nathalia Saraiva de; Soares,Guilherme Marques.
ABSTRACT: The popularity of cats as a companion animal has been growing. Additionally, there is also an increase in the number of complaints regarding behavioral problems associated with the species. Behavioral problems interfere with the animal welfare and quality of people’s lives that are living with them, and are one of the main reasons for abandonment and euthanasia in some countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of behavioral problems among cats with the help of veterinary practitioners in the city of Porto Alegre/Brazil. This evaluation was performed through a questionnaire in veterinary clinics and hospitals of small animals, which was answered by veterinarians responsible for clinical care. The study showed that most...

Food preferences of cockatiel chicks ( Nymphicus hollandicus ) in captivity Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Naves,D.A.S.; Carvalho,T.S.G.; Zangeronimo,M.G.; Saad,C.E.P.; Scalon,J.D..
ABSTRACT In order to improve the management and maintenance of the quality of life of captive wild birds, this study aimed to assess the food preferences of cockatiel chicks (Nymphicus hollandicus) kept in captivity. Thirty-two cockatiel chicks, three to 12 months of age, were kept in a galvanized, wire-netted vivarium with six ceramic feeders, two for an extruded diet, two for a dry-mashed diet and two for a seed mixture. Both extruded and dry-mashed food are commercial psittacine diets. Three round ceramic pots were used to provide water. The birds were exposed to 12 hours of artificial light (40 W incandescent lamps) during the experimental period of 27 days. The birds were observed by video filming, daily, through an ad libitum observation technique....

Frogs Call at a Higher Pitch in Traffic Noise Ecology and Society
Parris, Kirsten M; University of Melbourne; Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology, Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne; k.parris@unimelb.edu.au; Velik-Lord, Meah; University of Melbourne; meah@unimelb.edu.au; North, Joanne M. A.; University of Melbourne; fflojjo@yahoo.com.
Male frogs call to attract females for mating and to defend territories from rival males. Female frogs of some species prefer lower-pitched calls, which indicate larger, more experienced males. Acoustic interference occurs when background noise reduces the active distance or the distance over which an acoustic signal can be detected. Birds are known to call at a higher pitch or frequency in urban noise, decreasing acoustic interference from low-frequency noise. Using Bayesian linear regression, we investigated the effect of traffic noise on the pitch of advertisement calls in two species of frogs, the southern brown tree frog (Litoria ewingii) and the common eastern froglet (Crinia signifera). We found evidence that L. ewingii calls at a higher pitch in...

Farias, Mariana de Souza; UEM; Silva, Robério Rodrigues; UESB; Zawadzki, Fernando; UEM; Eiras, Carlos Emanuel; UEM; Lima, Beatriz Silva; UEM; Prado, Ivanor Nunes do; UEM.
The effect of glycerin inclusion on the intake behavior of heifers was analyzed. During the 102-day experimental period, thirty-six 13-month old heifers, average initial weight 226±12 kg, were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and nine replications: G0.0 = control, G2.8 = 2.8%, G6.1 = 6.1%, and G9.1 = 9.1% glycerin in DM intake. Intake behavior was undertaken by monitoring animal activities for 24 hours every five minutes. The inclusion of glycerin in the diet resulted in a linear decrease in grazing time, linear increase in idle time and quadratic effect on trough time. Moreover, glycerin inclusion did not affect the number of grazing and rumination periods. The number of idle periods showed a quadratic effect, whereas...

Improved grazing activity of dairy heifers in shaded tropical grasslands Ciência Rural
Mello,Andréia Cristina Tavares de; Carnevalli,Roberta Aparecida; Shiratsuchi,Luciano Shozo; Pedreira,Bruno Carneiro e; Lopes,Luciano Bastos; Xavier,Diego Batista.
ABSTRACT: Trees in the production systems can effectively reduce hot weather-induced stress in the Brazilian Midwest. High temperatures cause changes in animals daily routine, and trees into pastures can promote benefits. The aim of this research was to evaluate the behavior of dairy heifers in silvopastoral systems in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. A herd of 24 crossbreed heifers (3/4 and 7/8 Holstein/Zebu), 350kg average weight, was evaluated over three seasons. Piatã grass was managed under three shade levels: full-sun, moderate-shade, and intensive-shade provided by 10 to 12m high Eucalyptus trees. Behavior data were collected every 15 minutes from 8:30h to 16h. Shade availability significantly impacted heifer behavior, mainly affecting grazing...

Mutilating predation in the Cheirodontinae Odontostilbe pequira (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Lima,Monise R. L.; Bessa,Eduardo; Krinski,Diones; Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre.
We observed individuals of Odontostilbe pequira, a small characid, approaching and biting individuals of larger-bodied fishes of other species. This observation was made in two clear water headwater streams of the Cuiabá basin, Paraguay River system, located in Nobres, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, which led us to investigate the behavioral interactions of these fish. We characterized behavioral interactions between species by direct underwater observations using snorkelling and video recordings. Additionally, we proceeded diet analyses of O. pequira, obtaining intestinal coefficient and the index of alimentary importance. During underwater observations we checked the relative frequency of attacks by O. pequira on larger fish species. Odontostilbe pequira...

Neuroscience: unveiling the brain of Saimiri collinsi (Squirrel Monkey) Anais da ABC (AABC)
BRANCO,ÉRIKA; SENA,CAROLINE S.P. DE; PANTOJA,LUCIANA F.; SOARES,PAOLA C.; LIMA,ANA RITA DE..
Abstract Behavioral intelligence among non-human primates is a somewhat puzzling area to study, since it is closely linked to the morphology of the central nervous system. However, this morphology is still unknown to science in the case of Saimiri collinsi. As a means of assisting future studies on the social behavior of this species, we analyzed the brains of six adult females from the National Primate Center / Pará, which were sent to the Animal Morphological Research Laboratory at the Federal Rural University of Amazônia after death by natural causes. The animals were fixed in formaldehyde solution (10%) and dissected. The brains were covered externally by the dura mater, with long cerebral hemispheres, although there was a complete absence of gyri. The...

Precision livestock production: tools and concepts R. Bras. Zootec.
Laca,Emilio A..
Precision livestock production (PLP) is the augmentation of precision agriculture (PA) concepts to include all components of agroecosystems, particularly animals and plant-animal interactions. Soil, plants and soil-plant interactions are the subjects of PA or site-specific farming, where the main principle is to exploit natural spatial heterogeneity to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. For the most part, PA has been studied and developed for intensive cropping systems with little attention devoted to pastoral and agropastoral systems. PLP focuses on the animal component and exploits heterogeneity in space and among individual animals towards more efficient and environmentally friendly production. Within PLP, precision grazing consists...

Xaraés palisadegrass remains productive after the disappearance of stylo in tropical legume-grass pasture Scientia Agricola
Menezes,Rodrigo Carvalho; Alves,Eveline Bueno; Casagrande,Daniel Rume; Lara,Márcio André Stefanelli; Evangelista,Antônio Ricardo; Bernardes,Thiago Fernandes.
Gradual reduction of legumes in mixed tropical pastures requires periodic oversowing. Exploiting the carrying capacity of grass for an extra year after the disappearance of legumes can be economically advantageous to the farmer. This study aimed to evaluate the productivity of Xaraés palisadegrass (Brachiaria brizantha) pastures in response to its historical association with stylo (Stylosanthes guianensis) under two canopy heights to determine whether different grazing management conditions affect the defoliation pattern left by grazing animals. The split-plot experimental design was used, with the historical botanical composition (HBC) (24, 34, 45 and 52 % legume composition) corresponding to the main plots and the canopy frequency of defoliation...
